Butter stamp and bread marks

Knife-carved wooden stamps and hollow moulds used to decorate butter, and small carved pieces with which each Alpine family marked its bread before baking in the shared oven.

French: marque à beurre, moule creux · Alps · carved wood

At a glance

  • Region: the Alps, notably the Briançonnais
  • Material: carved wood
  • Use: decorating butter, identifying a family's loaves
  • Look for: crisp knife cuts, a design worn smooth by use

Marking bread

In regions where firewood was scarce, as in the Briançonnais, bread was baked only a few times a year, often in a communal oven. Each family pressed its own mark into the dough with a small carved piece of wood so the loaves could be told apart when they came out.

These marks bore initials, crosses, stars or simple geometric figures.

Decorating butter

Butter stamps and hollow moulds, carved with a knife, are found all over the Alps. Pressed onto a pat of butter, they left a flower, a heart, an animal or a geometric pattern that made the butter attractive at market and showed which farm had made it.

Moulds were wetted before use so the butter would release cleanly.

Collecting and using one today

Collectors look for well-cut, original designs with the soft wear of use. Fresh, sharp cuts on a supposedly old stamp, or a uniformly dark stain, call for caution.

A group of stamps hung together on a wall or set in a bowl makes a good small collection, and a clean stamp can still decorate butter for the table.

The book was published in 1995, so workshops, people and figures are described as they were then. Regional names and dates are given as the book records them; a style or a region of origin does not by itself date an individual piece.
