What it is

School desks from the late 19th and early 20th centuries combine cast-iron frames with wooden tops and seats, bolted to the floor in rows or mounted on runners. French pupitres were often made for two pupils, with a shared bench and two inkwells; American desks by makers such as A.H. Andrews or the Sears line were sold to districts across the country.

How to identify and date it

Maker names and patent dates are frequently cast into the iron side frames. Look for an inkwell hole, a pencil groove, a lift-up lid or an open shelf below. Old tops are carved, scratched and ink-stained; heavy sanding removes that history and lowers appeal. Check for cracked castings, missing bolts and seats that no longer fold.

Periods and styles

Ornate cast-iron desks with scrolling frames date from about 1880 to 1920; steel-frame tubular desks with laminate tops from the 1930s to the 1960s; French two-seat pupitres from the Third Republic school reforms of the 1880s to the 1950s.

How much is it worth?

On the US retail market, most school desk examples ask around $200. Simple or worn pieces start near $80, while documented, signed or exceptional examples can pass $500. The main value drivers are: cast-iron detail, inkwell, completeness. These are indicative ranges, not an appraisal; see our price guide for French antiques for the method.

Questions buyers ask: antique school desk value; how much is a vintage school desk worth; old school desk value; antique wooden school desk value. The answer depends on the points below, which are worth checking before you compare prices.

Before you buy

  • Check the castings for cracks
  • Confirm the seat mechanism
  • Inspect the lid hinges
  • Look for the maker's name
  • Make sure it can be freestanding if it was once bolted down

Living with it

A school desk works as a child's desk, a hall table for keys and mail, or a plant stand in a sunroom.

How we write these guides: identification notes are general guidance written by French Country; a style name, a region or a resemblance does not by itself date or attribute a piece. Price ranges are indicative US retail asking prices for antique and vintage examples in sound condition (dealers, specialist marketplaces and auctions), estimated and rounded as of November 2026; check recent sold results before relying on a figure. They are not appraisals or offers to buy or sell: condition, provenance and documentation can move a value far outside the range. For insurance, estates or sales, ask an independent, qualified appraiser for a written valuation.
