How much is it worth? A price guide to French and vintage antiques
Indicative US retail price ranges for 195 kinds of antiques, from armoires and oyster plates to comtoise clocks and cameo brooches, with what makes one example worth more than another. Use it to judge an asking price or to decide whether a piece deserves a formal appraisal.
How to read these prices
- Low is a simple, worn or later example; typical is a sound example of the common type; high is the start of the exceptional range (signed, documented, rare or in remarkable condition). Some pieces sell far above it.
- Prices are US retail asking prices. Auction results and private sales are often lower; restored, rewired or shipped pieces cost more.
- Condition, originality and evidence of age matter more than a style name. A "Louis XV" piece can be made in 1760 or in 1960.
- For insurance, an estate or a sale, ask an independent appraiser for a written valuation.
