What it is

Antique beds come in iron, brass and wood. The French repertoire includes the lit bateau (boat bed) of the Empire and Louis Philippe periods, the cane-panelled Louis XVI bed, the carved Louis XV bed and the painted iron bed of country houses. American buyers also seek Victorian cast-iron and brass beds from 1880 to 1920.

How to identify and date it

Size is the first question. Most French antique beds were made for a mattress of about 140 x 190 cm (55 x 75 in), close to a US full, and many are shorter. Converting to a queen usually means new side rails, which is acceptable when disclosed. Check the joints where the rails meet the head and foot: iron beds use cast fittings, wooden beds use bed bolts or hooks. Brass should be solid brass (a magnet will not stick) rather than brass-plated steel.

Periods and styles

Lits bateaux date from 1800 to 1850; Louis XV and XVI revival beds from 1860 to 1930; painted iron beds from 1870 to 1930; American brass and iron beds from 1880 to 1920.

How much is it worth?

On the US retail market, most antique bed frame examples ask around $900. Simple or worn pieces start near $300, while documented, signed or exceptional examples can pass $3,000. The main value drivers are: size (queen conversion), material, ornament, complete rails. These are indicative ranges, not an appraisal; see our price guide for French antiques for the method.

Questions buyers ask: antique cast iron bed frame value; antique brass bed frame value. The answer depends on the points below, which are worth checking before you compare prices.

Before you buy

  • Measure head and foot
  • Confirm rail length
  • Check for cracked castings
  • Test the magnet on brass
  • Ask whether a mattress will fit or a custom mattress is needed

Living with it

An iron bed brings lightness to a small bedroom; a carved walnut bed gives a bedroom its center of gravity.

How we write these guides: identification notes are general guidance written by French Country; a style name, a region or a resemblance does not by itself date or attribute a piece. Price ranges are indicative US retail asking prices for antique and vintage examples in sound condition (dealers, specialist marketplaces and auctions), estimated and rounded as of November 2026; check recent sold results before relying on a figure. They are not appraisals or offers to buy or sell: condition, provenance and documentation can move a value far outside the range. For insurance, estates or sales, ask an independent, qualified appraiser for a written valuation.
