What it is
Bookcases range from simple open shelving to the French bibliothèque with glazed or grilled doors, and the American barrister bookcase built of stacking sections with lift-up glass doors. In France, grilled doors of brass wire were common in libraries and notaries' offices; the form was revived throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries.
How to identify and date it
Barrister bookcases by Globe-Wernicke, Macey or Lundstrom carry labels inside a section or on the back; each section should lift off independently. French bibliothèques are often oak or walnut with fluted pilasters, a cornice and doors with wire mesh or small panes. Check shelf supports, glass and the match between top and base.

How we write these guides: identification notes are general guidance written by French Country; a style name, a region or a resemblance does not by itself date or attribute a piece. Price ranges are indicative US retail asking prices for antique and vintage examples in sound condition (dealers, specialist marketplaces and auctions), estimated and rounded as of November 2026; check recent sold results before relying on a figure. They are not appraisals or offers to buy or sell: condition, provenance and documentation can move a value far outside the range.
