What it is

French pottery covers a rich regional map. Quimper faience from Brittany is painted with Breton peasants and flowers; Vallauris and Biot on the Riviera became centers of art pottery after Picasso arrived in 1946; Dieulefit and Cliousclat in the Drôme make slip-decorated earthenware; Savoie, Alsace (Soufflenheim) and the Southwest have their own glazed folk pottery; Gien and Sarreguemines produced fine earthenware for the whole country.

How to identify and date it

Look for marks and signatures: "HB Quimper," "Henriot Quimper" and painters' initials; "Vallauris" with studio names (Madoura, Capron, Les Archanges); stamps of Gien and Sarreguemines. Glaze, shape and decoration identify region. Check for chips, glaze losses, hairline cracks and restorations, which show under UV light.

Periods and styles

Quimper dates from 1880 to 1960; Vallauris art pottery from 1945 to 1975; regional folk pottery from the 19th and 20th centuries.

The main value drivers are: workshop, signature, glaze. These are indicative ranges, not an appraisal; see our price guide for French antiques for the method.

Living with it

Display French pottery on a dresser, or use it every day in the kitchen.

How we write these guides: identification notes are general guidance written by French Country; a style name, a region or a resemblance does not by itself date or attribute a piece. Price ranges are indicative US retail asking prices for antique and vintage examples in sound condition (dealers, specialist marketplaces and auctions), estimated and rounded as of November 2026; check recent sold results before relying on a figure. They are not appraisals or offers to buy or sell: condition, provenance and documentation can move a value far outside the range. For insurance, estates or sales, ask an independent, qualified appraiser for a written valuation.
