What it is

Lamp shades shape a lamp's light and character. Antique and vintage shades include glass globes and tulips (Art Nouveau, Holophane), leaded and slag-glass shades from American makers, hand-painted reverse-painted shades by Handel and Pairpoint, pleated silk shades of the 1920s, parchment and paper shades, and French opaline globes.

How to identify and date it

Glass shades should be checked for chips at the fitter rim, cracks and missing pieces in leaded panels; reverse-painted shades should keep their paint intact. Fabric shades of age are fragile; often only the frame is reusable. Measure the fitter (the opening at the base) to make sure it fits your lamp.

Periods and styles

Most collectible shades date from 1890 to 1960.

How much is it worth?

On the US retail market, most lamp shade examples ask around $120. Simple or worn pieces start near $30, while documented, signed or exceptional examples can pass $600. The main value drivers are: glass, painting, rarity. These are indicative ranges, not an appraisal; see our price guide for French antiques for the method.

Before you buy

  • Inspect glass
  • Check fabric

Living with it

A pleated linen shade on an antique base modernizes a lamp; a glass tulip shade brings Belle Époque charm.

How we write these guides: identification notes are general guidance written by French Country; a style name, a region or a resemblance does not by itself date or attribute a piece. Price ranges are indicative US retail asking prices for antique and vintage examples in sound condition (dealers, specialist marketplaces and auctions), estimated and rounded as of November 2026; check recent sold results before relying on a figure. They are not appraisals or offers to buy or sell: condition, provenance and documentation can move a value far outside the range. For insurance, estates or sales, ask an independent, qualified appraiser for a written valuation.
