What it is

Venetian mirrors are framed in glass rather than wood. Murano glassmakers developed the type from the 16th century, and the classic 19th- and 20th-century Venetian mirror has a central plate surrounded by etched, beveled glass borders, with applied glass rosettes, leaves, scrolls and a tall crest. The form was copied in France, Belgium and the United States, and production continued strongly from the 1920s to the 1970s.

How to identify and date it

Look closely at the etching: hand-engraved flowers have slight variations and depth, while later acid-etched or sandblasted patterns are flatter and more regular. Each glass ornament is screwed or wired to a backing board, so check for missing rosettes, cracked leaves and loose fixings. Original silvering may show gray spots at the edges. A heavy, thick backboard and old screws point to age.

How much is it worth?

On the US retail market, most venetian mirror examples ask around $1,500. Simple or worn pieces start near $400, while documented, signed or exceptional examples can pass $8,000. The main value drivers are: size, completeness, age. These are indicative ranges, not an appraisal; see our price guide for French antiques for the method.

Before you buy

  • Count ornaments and look for gaps
  • Check silvering
  • Inspect the backboard
  • Plan secure hanging, as these mirrors are fragile and heavy

Living with it

A Venetian mirror above a bathroom vanity or a bedroom dresser adds sparkle; it pairs well with painted French furniture.

How we write these guides: identification notes are general guidance written by French Country; a style name, a region or a resemblance does not by itself date or attribute a piece. Price ranges are indicative US retail asking prices for antique and vintage examples in sound condition (dealers, specialist marketplaces and auctions), estimated and rounded as of November 2026; check recent sold results before relying on a figure. They are not appraisals or offers to buy or sell: condition, provenance and documentation can move a value far outside the range. For insurance, estates or sales, ask an independent, qualified appraiser for a written valuation.
