What it is

Wall sconces (appliques, bras de lumière) were the main source of light in French rooms for centuries, first for candles and later converted to gas and electricity. Louis XV sconces in gilt bronze have asymmetric branches of leaves and scrolls; Louis XVI sconces have a quiver, ribbon or torch backplate with symmetrical arms; Empire models have classical figures. Crystal-dropped sconces, painted tole sconces with porcelain flowers and Art Deco frosted glass sconces followed.

How to identify and date it

Sconces were made in pairs or sets of four, so singles sell at a strong discount; check that a pair truly matches in casting and size. Look at backplates for extra holes from past installations. Gilt bronze should be heavy, cast and chased; stamped brass is lighter. Crystal drops should be cut, not molded. Nearly all need UL rewiring and a US mounting plate.

Periods and styles

Louis XV and XVI revival sconces date from 1870 to 1950; tole sconces from 1920 to 1960; Art Deco sconces from 1925 to 1940.

How much is it worth?

On the US retail market, most wall sconce examples ask around $800. Simple or worn pieces start near $200, while documented, signed or exceptional examples can pass $4,000. The main value drivers are: pairs, bronze, crystals, rewiring. These are indicative ranges, not an appraisal; see our price guide for French antiques for the method.

Before you buy

  • Confirm the pair
  • Inspect castings
  • Check crystals
  • Ask about rewiring and mounting

Living with it

Sconces flanking a mirror, a bed or a painting bring warm, low light and symmetry.

How we write these guides: identification notes are general guidance written by French Country; a style name, a region or a resemblance does not by itself date or attribute a piece. Price ranges are indicative US retail asking prices for antique and vintage examples in sound condition (dealers, specialist marketplaces and auctions), estimated and rounded as of November 2026; check recent sold results before relying on a figure. They are not appraisals or offers to buy or sell: condition, provenance and documentation can move a value far outside the range. For insurance, estates or sales, ask an independent, qualified appraiser for a written valuation.
