What it is
Antique frames are collected for themselves, by artists, dealers and decorators. French frames follow the styles of each period: Louis XIII ebonized and carved frames, Louis XIV and XV giltwood frames with corner cartouches and shells, Louis XVI frames with beading and ribbons, Barbizon frames with heavy composition ornament, and the simple Montparnasse frames of the 1920s-30s.
How to identify and date it
Real gilding shows red or ochre bole beneath worn gold leaf; gold paint looks flat. Carved wood is crisp and slightly irregular; composition (molded plaster) ornament is repetitive and can crack. Check corners for open joints and losses; measure the rabbet (the opening at the back) if you want to fit a painting.
Periods and styles
Most date from 1700 to 1930.

Living with it
An empty gilt frame on a wall is decor in its own right; a group of frames makes a striking gallery.
How we write these guides: identification notes are general guidance written by French Country; a style name, a region or a resemblance does not by itself date or attribute a piece. Price ranges are indicative US retail asking prices for antique and vintage examples in sound condition (dealers, specialist marketplaces and auctions), estimated and rounded as of November 2026; check recent sold results before relying on a figure. They are not appraisals or offers to buy or sell: condition, provenance and documentation can move a value far outside the range. For insurance, estates or sales, ask an independent, qualified appraiser for a written valuation.
