What it is
Postcards (cartes postales) of the golden age, 1900 to 1920, record villages, markets, trades, regional costumes, floods, festivals and daily life across France. Publishers such as ND Phot., LL (Lévy et fils) and countless local photographers printed millions of cards; real photographic cards (cartes photo) and "animated" scenes full of people are the most collected.
How to identify and date it
Publisher names and numbers on the front, postmarks and stamps on the back help date cards. Animated scenes of small villages, trades and events are worth more than landscapes and monuments. Check for creases, trimmed corners, stains and fading.
Real photo postcards and postal marks.
Periods and styles
Most date from 1900 to 1950.
How much is it worth?
On the US retail market, most vintage postcard examples ask around $5. Simple or worn pieces start near $1, while documented, signed or exceptional examples can pass $100. The main value drivers are: subject, rarity. These are indicative ranges, not an appraisal; see our price guide for French antiques for the method.
Questions buyers ask: how much are vintage postcards worth. The answer depends on the points below, which are worth checking before you compare prices.

Living with it
Frame postcards of a family village or a favorite region for a personal touch, or display them in an old postcard rack.
How we write these guides: identification notes are general guidance written by French Country; a style name, a region or a resemblance does not by itself date or attribute a piece. Price ranges are indicative US retail asking prices for antique and vintage examples in sound condition (dealers, specialist marketplaces and auctions), estimated and rounded as of November 2026; check recent sold results before relying on a figure. They are not appraisals or offers to buy or sell: condition, provenance and documentation can move a value far outside the range. For insurance, estates or sales, ask an independent, qualified appraiser for a written valuation.
