What it is
Antique and vintage engagement rings carry the style of their era: Georgian rings with foiled stones, Victorian rings with old mine-cut diamonds in gold, Edwardian platinum rings with fine filigree and milgrain, Art Deco rings with geometric settings and calibré sapphires, and retro and mid-century solitaires.
How to identify and date it
Old mine and old European cut diamonds have a small table, a high crown and an open culet (a small facet at the bottom) visible through the top; modern brilliant cuts are flatter and sharper. Platinum mounts point to about 1900-1940. Check hallmarks, prongs, shank thickness and resizing marks, and ask for a gemological report from an independent laboratory.

Living with it
An antique ring carries the romance of another era and is often more distinctive than a new one.
How we write these guides: identification notes are general guidance written by French Country; a style name, a region or a resemblance does not by itself date or attribute a piece. Price ranges are indicative US retail asking prices for antique and vintage examples in sound condition (dealers, specialist marketplaces and auctions), estimated and rounded as of November 2026; check recent sold results before relying on a figure. They are not appraisals or offers to buy or sell: condition, provenance and documentation can move a value far outside the range. For insurance, estates or sales, ask an independent, qualified appraiser for a written valuation.
