What it is
Antique rings span the history of jewelry: Georgian rings with foiled stones, Victorian mourning rings with hair and enamel, snake rings popularized by Queen Victoria, Edwardian platinum and diamond rings with milgrain, Art Deco geometric rings, retro rose-gold cocktail rings of the 1940s, and signet rings engraved with initials or coats of arms. French rings include the "toi et moi" with two stones and the marquise ring with an elongated cluster.
How to identify and date it
Hallmarks inside the shank identify the metal and sometimes date and maker; French 18-carat gold carries the eagle head. A jeweler can test stones and metal. Check the shank for thinning and resizing marks, prongs and settings for wear, and stones for chips and abrasion. Replaced stones and later alterations reduce value.
Periods and styles
Most date from 1800 to 1960.
How much is it worth?
On the US retail market, most antique ring examples ask around $400. Simple or worn pieces start near $50, while documented, signed or exceptional examples can pass $5,000. The main value drivers are: metal, stones. These are indicative ranges, not an appraisal; see our price guide for French antiques for the method.
Questions buyers ask: are old masonic rings valuable; art deco diamond ring price; antique jade ring value; 100 year old diamond ring value. The answer depends on the points below, which are worth checking before you compare prices.
Before you buy
- Read hallmarks
- Check shank and prongs
- Have stones tested
Living with it
Stack antique rings of different periods, or wear a single signet ring daily.
How we write these guides: identification notes are general guidance written by French Country; a style name, a region or a resemblance does not by itself date or attribute a piece. Price ranges are indicative US retail asking prices for antique and vintage examples in sound condition (dealers, specialist marketplaces and auctions), estimated and rounded as of November 2026; check recent sold results before relying on a figure. They are not appraisals or offers to buy or sell: condition, provenance and documentation can move a value far outside the range. For insurance, estates or sales, ask an independent, qualified appraiser for a written valuation.
